Who Needs to Register for Hazmat?

  1. Transporting hazardous materials that require placarding under federal regulations.
  2. Shipping hazardous materials in bulk packaging with a capacity greater than:
    • 119 gallons for liquids.
    • 882 pounds for solids.
    • 1,000 gallons water capacity for gases.
  3. Offering hazardous materials for transport by air, rail, vessel, or highway.
  4. Handling materials classified as hazardous waste, marine pollutants, or infectious substances.

How to Register for Hazmat

  1. Determine Eligibility:
    Ensure your operation involves regulated hazardous materials as defined under Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Parts 100-185.
  2. Complete the Registration Form
  3. Pay the Registration Fee:
    Fees vary depending on your company’s size and activities:
    • Small Businesses/Non-Profit Organizations: $250 (plus a $25 processing fee).
    • Large Businesses: $2,575 (plus a $25 processing fee).
  4. Receive Your Certificate:
    After approval, you’ll receive a certificate of registration valid for one year.
  5. Renew Annually:
    Registration must be renewed yearly. Renewal notices are typically sent 60 days before the expiration date.

Recordkeeping Requirements

Registered entities must retain the following for three years:

  • A copy of the registration certificate.
  • Records of hazardous materials transported.
  • Emergency response documentation.
