FMCSA MOTUS Is Live — But Trucking Companies Are Experiencing Problems

FMCSA MOTUS Is Live — Common Problems – Prospect Licensing & Consulting

FMCSA’s new MOTUS USDOT Registration System is officially live, but the transition hasn’t been without challenges.

Trucking companies and service providers are reporting difficulties with account access, identity verification, linking existing USDOT Numbers, and submitting biennial updates.

At Prospect Licensing & Consulting Inc., we’ve been working with the new system and have encountered several recurring issues carriers should be aware of.

Common MOTUS Problems

1. Identity Verification Errors

Some users are unable to complete identity verification and receive error messages such as “Application Closed,” preventing them from moving forward.

2. Unable to Link an Existing USDOT Number

Even after successfully completing identity verification, some carriers cannot link their existing USDOT Number to their MOTUS account. If your “Link USDOT Number” button is grayed out, read FMCSA MOTUS Warning: Is Your “Link USDOT Number” Button Grayed Out?

3. Unable to Submit Biennial Updates

In certain cases, the account is established, identity verification is complete, and the USDOT Number is linked — but the system still won’t allow users to submit biennial updates or make changes to their company information.

What Should You Do If You Experience Problems?

If you’re having trouble completing a MOTUS transaction:

  • Contact FMCSA and submit a support ticket explaining the problem.
  • Provide the requested documentation, including identity or ownership verification documents when required.
  • Save your FMCSA reference number so you can follow up on your existing case.
  • Take screenshots of error messages and document your attempts to complete the filing.
  • Avoid creating duplicate accounts or making unnecessary changes while your support request is pending.

Important Update: Temporary Suspension of Certain USDOT Inactivations

FMCSA has temporarily suspended certain USDOT Number inactivations involving carriers that have not completed required biennial updates since June 1, 2026, due to MOTUS-related system and access issues.

This provides affected carriers additional time to resolve their account problems.

However, the biennial update requirement has not been eliminated. Carriers should continue working toward completing their required filings and maintain records of any technical difficulties. See our guide to important trucking deadlines.

The Bottom Line

MOTUS is a new system, and technical issues are creating challenges for trucking companies trying to maintain their FMCSA registrations.

If you encounter a problem, document it, submit an FMCSA support ticket, and follow up until it is resolved. Need help? Schedule a free consultation.
